Manager, Laboratory Services (Management / Laboratory)

Responsibilities

As a Manager, Laboratory Services, you will manage the activities of the Laboratory Services department ensuring that raw materials and final products are tested on time and meeting all applicable procedures and specifications. This includes oversight of equipment operation and maintenance, documentation, product control, product handling, storage, and other tasks associated with ensuring the quality and suitability of products.

Additional responsibilities of the Manager, Laboratory Services include:

  • Provides direction to the laboratory staff in the performance of daily tasks. Ensures that department employees follow all applicable regulatory and safety requirements.

  • Reviews/approves as needed, laboratory records for completeness, accuracy, and acceptability of results and for conformance to written specifications, SOPs, and applicable regulations (inclusive but not limited to: FDA, Health Canada, ISO 13485, OSHA, etc.).

  • Schedules laboratory activities to meet production requirements.

  • Ensures timely completion of out-of-specification records, root cause analyses, and deviations investigations.

  • Implements key performance metrics to monitor and improve the laboratory activities efficiencies and compliance

  • Implements continuous improvements initiatives to increase laboratory efficiencies such as elimination of redundant tests, 5S, kanban, balanced workload, etc.

  • Manages employee training activities including appropriate training records.

  • Performs employee appraisals.

  • Timely identifies and documents, under the direction of Human Resources department, the need for any employee intervention inclusive of disciplinary actions.

  • Establishes a succession planning process for laboratories key functions (e.g. Supervisor, etc.).

  • Assists with the preparation of department budget and keeps expenses within established limits.

  • Interacts cooperatively with coworkers, supervisors, or managers of other departments and receives direction well from superiors.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director, Laboratory Services.

Manager, Laboratory Services (Management / Laboratory)

Qualifications

As a Manager, Laboratory Services, you must have a demonstrated ability to adhere closely to department procedures at all times. Also, you must possess people skills that will allow you to lead the lab, maintain department morale, and interact cooperatively with workers from other departments.

Specific requirements for this management role will include:

  • Fifth year college or university program certificate with two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent comination or education and experience.

  • MT (ASCP) or SBB certification, preferred

  • Lean Six Sigma certification, preferred

  • Specialist in Blood Bank

  • 5-7 years of experience in Blood Banking

  • 3+ years of experience in regulated/ GMP environment

  • Ability to successfully manage a team of 5-10 employees

  • Must understand FDA and ISO standards applicable to the department and consequences of non-conformance

  • Close vision required to read and interpret standard tube and microplate hemagglutination reactions. Color vision required to read and interpret hemolysis of red blood cells and the dyes added to reagent products
